Excel Center Campaign

The Community Need

According to the 2010 US Census, over 65,000+ Rochester residents do not have a High School diploma which contributes to very high unemployment and poverty rates for this population. If these individuals had the chance to earn a high school diploma and develop the skills to meet the needs of our local businesses, we could close the gap, bolster the economy while transforming the lives of individuals and their families.

An Evidenced Based Solution

Goodwill of the Finger Lakes, along with many community stakeholders want to bring The Excel Center, a High School that provides adults with the opportunity to earn their high school diploma and a middle skills credential while earning dual credits for college at no cost to the students.

This innovative model is a proven solution to address the drop out epidemic and enhance the career potential of individuals without a high school diploma. The Excel Center was developed in Indiana in 2010. Since its launch, the Indiana Excel Center has experienced incredible success, with measurable impact in their community. In 2013, the Excel Center expanded and is now operating in Texas, Tennessee, and Washington, DC. The outcomes of the Excel Centers are remarkable. Since 2010, over 2,400 individuals have earned their high school diploma and over 3,600 industry credentials. Approximately 80% of the graduates are employed or in college one year after graduation and 100% of Excel Center graduates who go on to college are academically prepared without the need for remediation.

A mother helps her young daughter with school work in the kitchen. The Excel Center is an adult learning model that transforms lives at a foundational level. This holistic approach offers rigorous academic coursework, flexible class times, transportation, and a child drop in center to eliminate child care barriers. Life coaches are available to ensure that students in this intergenerational setting get all the support, mentoring and encouragement they need to become successful and contributing members of the community.

The Excel Center is a solution to help break the cycles of poverty and dropping out, by providing a pathway for economic self-reliance and possibilities for adults without a high school diploma. The generous investment of community members will help us provide an innovative and successful program that will make a lasting impact in our community.
