2026 Sustainability Under the Stars

Designer Guidelines

THE CHARGE: Create wearable designs from materials sourced at Goodwill of the Finger Lakes.

We’re looking for creative, repurposed, and reworked apparel that shows off the art of transformation. Think pre-loved pieces taken apart and reimagined into something new –like old jeans turned into a tailored denim dress – or unexpected thrifted finds, such as curtains transformed into a skirt. The goal is to create standout looks made entirely from items thrifted from Goodwill of the Finger Lakes.

WHO CAN APPLY?

  • Individual designers
  • Design teams (up to 2 people)
  • People of all ages (individuals under 18 years of age must have adult contact)
  • Individuals who live within the Goodwill of the Finger Lakes service area (see locations HERE)

PARAMETERS

  • Designs must be made from at least 75% Goodwill-sourced materials. (Exceptions: shoes, thread, zippers, snaps, etc.)
  • Each designer will create 5 looks
  • All looks should be created with our family-friendly environment in mind
  • All looks should be safe to wear
  • No nudity
  • No glitter
  • No pets (sorry!)
  • Must attend pre-event planning sessions (dates and times selected based on participants’ availability) plus 9/11 fashion show in Rochester, NY. Attendance is mandatory.

THE FINE PRINT

  • Signed media release forms are required for all designers and models. Photos and videos will be used on Goodwill of the Finger Lakes' website, social media platforms, and for other marketing purposes.
  • Designer bio and description of final concept, inspiration, and materials used due by 8/11. This information will be used for promotions and publicity efforts.
  • Designers recruit their own models and can serve as models themselves. Models under the age of 18 are permitted to have one parent or guardian with them backstage. Should parent or guardian like to attend the runway show and fundraising event, a ticket must be purchased.

The Sustainability Under the Stars review committee will review all applicants’ information and may follow up if additional information is needed. Goodwill of the Finger Lakes reserves the right to make final determinations on which designers will be part of the 2026 show.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The following criteria will be considered when selecting designers:

  1. Mission: Does the applicant’s submission align with the event’s focus on sustainability, upcycling, and reuse?
  2. Creativity and originality: Do the applicant’s prior creations demonstrate imagination and a strong point of view?
  3. Quality of concept: Does the applicant’s inspiration, vision, and overall aesthetic for their runway-ready ensembles make for a strong runway concept?
  4. Craftsmanship and construction: In looking at samples of previously completed work, were looks thoughtfully constructed and ready for presentation in a live event setting?
