SYRACUSE, N.Y. (September 16, 2011) – Goodwill of the Finger Lakes is expanding its retail store operations with the opening of its brand new store in Syracuse, the first of its kind in Onondaga County. The Grand Opening of the new store will occur on Saturday, September 24, 2011 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the very welcoming reception we’ve received from everyone here in Syracuse and Onondaga County. We’re excited by this great community’s vibrant and enterprising spirit and look forward to the opportunity to build upon the numerous collaborations we’ve already fostered within the area with organizations like Aurora of Central New York, Enable and the ARC of Onondaga County to benefit as many people as possible,” says A. Gidget Hopf, Ed.D, President and CEO of Goodwill of the Finger Lakes.

The opening of the new Goodwill store will have an immediate positive impact on Syracuse and the Onondaga County area.
The local economy will be boosted through Goodwill’s creation of nearly 30 full and part-time employment opportunities for local residents, including many who are experiencing barriers to independence.
The positive impact of the store’s opening will also be reflected in the dollars saved by local shoppers throughout Syracuse and the surrounding communities because Goodwill offers gently used and new items at up to 80 percent off mall store prices.
In addition, the store’s dedicated donation drop off location will help to divert millions of pounds of materials from landfills each year, providing a positive environmental impact. Those donated clothing and household items will instead be hand-processed, sized and colorized in the store with revenues derived from their sale supporting programs, services and employment opportunities for people of all ages who have barriers to employment.
Goodwill of the Finger Lakes will also bring to the Syracuse community its Good Neighbor Program. This program provides outreach and services to help support the missions of other non-profits in the area. Additionally, the new store will house a community room to provide free space for local organizations to hold meetings and events.
